Scars
Hammersmith, West London
Scars are marks on the skin that form after wounding or surgery when a cut or laceration heals. They develop because your body produces excess collagen to strengthen the wound as it repairs. Scars can form on the skin’s surface or internally and are permanent once they develop.
Sometimes scars can remain red and raised (known as hypertrophic), appear sunken (pitted scars), or the scar tissue can spread beyond the original wound (keloid scars).
Treatment for Scars
If you don’t like the way your scar looks or if it’s causing you discomfort, there are treatment options:
Silicone Sheets
Silicone sheets can be bought at your pharmacy. Placing them over a healing scar helps reduce inflammation. For best results, they should be worn all day for at least three months.
Pressure Dressings
Stretchy, elastic bandages that can be used with silicone sheets to help smooth scars.
Corticosteroid Injections
Used to flatten hypertrophic or keloid scars by softening excess scar tissue.
Laser Treatment
Laser beams can target scars to break up excess scar tissue.
Dermal Fillers
Injections that fill out pitted scars to smooth the skin’s appearance.
Derma Pen / Microneedling
Also known as collagen induction therapy, this treatment stimulates collagen production to help improve the look of scars.
